‘DRAGON BALL’ RETURNS WITH FIRST NEW ANIMATED SERIES IN 18 YEARS

The ubiquity of Dragon Ball series and films make it feel as if Goku and co. never really left, but the Z Fighters (Or is it GT? Are there names?) are finally back in an official capacity after nearly two decades. Production has officially begun on a new Japanese series Dragon Ball Super, picking up where the prior series of films left off.

Per Entertainment Weekly, production has officially begun on the new series, which takes place some time after the events of the film Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection “F” and will debut in Japan this July. For the moment at least, no details are yet known of an American re-release, the way Cartoon Network re-dubbed and popularized the series stateside.
According to Toei Animation, Super will pick up after Goku’s battle with Majin Buu as he “attempts to maintain Earth’s fragile peace.” Notably, original Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama will oversee the new series under Fuji Television.

Dragon Ball last debuted new episodes with the mid-’90s GT series, while 2009′s Dragon Ball Kai largely repackaged old Dragon Ball Z episodes. Can U.S. adaptations of Dragon Ball Super be far behind, given the franchise popularity?

CM PUNK TO CO-WRITE NEW ONGOING ‘DRAX’ SERIES

If either of them ever come back to the squared circle any time soon, former WWE superstars CM Punk (a.k.a. Phil Brooks) and Dave Bautista may have to tussle over ownership of Drax the Destroyer.
Marvel announced at C2E2 in Punk’s hometown of Chicago this weekend that he is the co-writer of a new Drax ongoing series set to debut late this year. (Bautista played the character in last summer’s Guardians of the Galaxy movie.) The publisher unveiled an Ed McGuinness-drawn cover to the first issue, but hasn’t yet named the artist for the series, nor Punk’s co-writer.
The series will reportedly follow Drax from ”the intergalactic octagon to the far reaches of outer space.” That’s appropriate for Brooks, who walked away from WWE last year and is prepping for his first-ever match as a fighter in UFC. Notably, Bautista has also been a mixed martial arts fighter. He won his one match with the CES MMA promotion back in 2012.
So, who knows, maybe the two of them could duke it out in the octagon to claim their stakes on Drax. They have options.
Punk’s been busy. Not only has he been training for his UFC debut, he has also penned stories for this year’s Thor annual and Vertigo’s Strange Sports Stories anthology.
Punk coming in to co-write a Drax series in which he apparently spends some time as a professional fighter echoes the first issue of Skottie Young‘s Rocket Racoon series, which partially takes place at a pro wrestling event. I’m just saying, if the second Guardians of the Galaxy movie doesn’t at least have someone doing an atomic elbow or a superplex in it, I’ll be shocked.

DC COMICS CONFIRMS FRANK MILLER'S "DARK KNIGHT III" IN FALL 2015

"The Dark Knight III: The Master Race" is slated to debut in fall 2015.
Friday at C2E2, writer Brian Azzarello took the stage late in the New DC Universe panel to tell the audience to close their eyes. Once they complied he had three letters for them to consider: "DK3" -- thus confirming that "Dark Knight Returns 3," officially titled "The Dark Knight III: The Master Race," is in the works. The series will run for eight issues, with installments scheduled to be released twice a month starting in late fall 2015.

"For the past six months, I've been working with Frank Miller to bring the next chapter in the 'Dark Knight' to light," he said. It's been humbling. I've learned a lot, and I call him sensei. It's a really, really big project."

Miller confirmed the news himself via Twitter (his first tweet in three and a half years), releasing promotional art from the story and stating, "I hope that by now my silence is deafening." In the official press release, DC Comics billed the story as "the epic conclusion of the celebrated 'The Dark Knight Returns' saga."

Rumors of a threequel to the classic "The Dark Knight Returns" graphic novel and its new millennium sequel "The Dark Knight Strikes Again" have been circulating for months, with many reports indicating that Miller would not write and draw the new book alone as he had (with inker Klaus Janson and colorist Lynn Varley) in the past. Azzarello's announcement confirms at least part of that rumor, and DC's release specifies that artists on the project haven't yet been announced.

Originally released in 1986, "The Dark Knight Returns" stands as one of the most influential and acclaimed superhero stories of any era. Its conflict between Batman and Superman has been cited as an inspiration for upcoming Warner Bros. film "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," and it appears that this story will also involve the Man of Steel -- with a bloodied Superman logo appearing prominently in the promo art released.

SONY ANNOUNCES ANIMATED "SPIDER-MAN" MOVIE FOR 2018

Get ready for even more Spider-Man on the big screen. According to multiple online sources including Variety, Sony Pictures' CinemaCon presentation on Wednesday included the announcement of an animated Spider-Man film set for release in 2018, with "The LEGO Movie" and "21 Jump Street" directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller on board to write a treatment and produce the film. They are not yet signed on to direct, though Deadline notes it as a possibility.

The animated film is said to "co-exist" with live-action Spidey film projects, though it "will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing." Spider-Man franchise vets Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce, along with former Sony Pictures Chairperson Amy Pascal, who will produce the new live-action Spider-Man film with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.

Spider-Man's animated feature film debut has a release date of July 20, 2018, roughly a year after the scheduled release date of Sony and Marvel's live-action Spidey film, July 28, 2017.

"DAREDEVIL" GETS SECOND SEASON WITH NEW SHOWRUNNERS

Marvel.com has announced that "Marvel's Daredevil" will return in 2016 for a second season on Netflix, but this time around, a different team will be running the show: Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez are set to take over from season one showrunner Steven DeKnight. Both Petrie and Ramirez worked on season one; Petrie as a co-executive producer and Ramirez as a supervising producer.

DeKnight took over from original "Daredevil" showrunner Drew Goddard, who wrote the show's first two episodes. DeKnight, Goddard and Petrie are all veterans of working with "Avengers" writer and director Joss Whedon, each having worked on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel." Prior to "Daredevil," Ramirez wrote for "Da Vinci's Demons," "Sons of Anarchy" and fellow Netflix original series "Orange Is the New Black."

Starring Charlie Cox in the title role of Matt Murdock/Daredevil, the 13-episode first season of "Daredevil" debuted in full on April 10, attracting nearly universal praise from fans and critics. The next Marvel-based Netflix series set to premiere is "Marvel's A.K.A. Jessica Jones," expected later this year.

ZACK SNYDER TEASES "BATMAN V SUPERMAN" TRAILER EVENT WITH 20-SECOND CLIP

Following earlier reports, director Zack Snyder has confirmed the reveal of the first "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" trailer via IMAX screenings this coming Monday, April 20 -- and did so on Twitter, while releasing a quick 20-second tease focused on the movie's two main DC Comics icons (at least their costumes).

The trailer screenings will be held at IMAX theaters across the country, and will include an intro from Snyder. Interested fans can search for nearby venues and register -- space is, of course, limited -- via the film's website. Variety reports that the event is expected to be 15 minutes long.

"Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," starring Ben Affleck in his first appearance as Batman and Henry Cavill returning to his "Man of Steel" role of Superman, is scheduled for release on March 25, 2016.

HAPPY 40TH BIRTHDAY, GAMORA

Many warriors that roam the galaxy, looking for an adventure or mayhem—none have as apt a reputation as Gamora, the deadliest woman in the galaxy!

The sole survivor of a peaceful alien race called the Zen Whoberis, a young Gamora found herself adopted by the Death-loving Mad Titan, Thanos. During her adolescent years on the space station Sanctuary, she learned about the art of killing and put those skills to use during her quest to assassinate the Magus.

STRANGE TALES (1973) #180

Judgment Day!

Gamora first appeared 40 years ago this month in STRANGE TALES #180 by Jim Starlin. The woman warrior stepped out of the shadows, dagger in hand and ready to fight.

I Plan to Kill Adam Warlock!

While in a sleazy tavern on the distant planet Homeworld, Gamora made her presence known to Adam Warlock's travel companion Pip the Troll. She spoke of her mission to find Warlock in order to use him as a weapon against her adopted father's greatest enemy, the Magus.

The Deadliest Woman in the Whole Galaxy!

Gamora and Pip tracked Adam Warlock down, only to discover that he had been mind-controlled by enemy agents and trapped in the Holy Palace. Her reputation, however, preceded her and allowed the duo to acquire the information they needed.

You Meatbag!

As they got closer to their goal, more and more enemy technos appeared. Gamora and Pip threw caution to the wind and threw themselves into battle, although the troll's eagerness to help his "partner" greatly angered the deadly warrior.

Free Warlock

With all the technos accidentally knocked unconscious, Gamora and Pip had to search the entire cellblock for Adam Warlock. They finally stumbled upon him and gave him the boost he needed to short out the helmet holding his mind hostage.

Enter: The Magus!

The trio rushed to the control room to discover the identity of the villain playing puppet master to their recent troubles—the Magus! Gamora's days as an assassin-for-hire would be numbered, however, as her missions with Warlock would firmly align her on the side of good, a side she currently fights for as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy!

YOUR SUPERMOVIE TIMELINE

For anyone who remembers the days when just one Spider-Man movie seemed an impossible dream, the above infographic is an astonishing representation of how comic book superheroes now dominate popular entertainment. ComicsAlliance’s own graphics maestro Dylan Todd put together this timeline that reveals what the next six years of superhero movies look like, with some dates and titles still to be announced. The graphic will be updated as new information is released.

The latest changes arise from a deal between Sony and Marvel to tie Spider-Man in to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That means a new date for the next Spider-Man movie, which will again reboot that series, and revised dates for Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Inhumans. Some Spider-Man spin-offs have been removed from the calendar entirely, and Sinister Six is now in limbo.

Previous additions to the timeline include a date for Gambit, starring Channing Tatum in the title role, and a revised release date for Fantastic Four 2, both from 20th Century Fox.

Warner Bros. announcement in October 2014 of ten upcoming movies based on DC Comics properties neatly filled in a calendar of dates that the studio previously provided — and helped flesh out an extraordinary timetable of DC and Marvel superhero movies over the next six years from Warner Bros, Marvel Studios, Fox, and Sony.

Marvel Studios added significant changes to the timeline on October 28, when the company confirmed no fewer than eight titles and release dates for films including a Black Panther movie starring Chadwick Boseman; Captain Marvel and Inhumans movies, and a two-part Avengers: Infinity War movie spanning 2018 and 2019.

Doctor Strange’s November release date marks a change from Marvel’s previously announced plan to release a movie in July 2016, suggesting that the studio thinks it needs more time to make the movie. This leaves 2016 without a summer Marvel Studios movie. Stay strong, chums.

‘X-MEN: APOCALYPSE’ CONCEPT ART REVEALS BEN HARDY’S ARCHANGEL

From the moment we knew that the next X-Men movie was going to be titled X-Men: Apocalypse, comic geeks knew to expect the return of Angel. But not just any Angel, and certainly not the traditional, angelic version that showed up in X-Men: The Last Stand. Now, all of those geeky suspicions and predictions have come to fruition. Director Bryan Singer has revealed new concept art that shows off Archangel, the nastier, slightly more villainous version of the character.

Speaking with Empire (via Comic Book Movie), Singer first confirmed that actor Ben Hardy will play the winged mutant in his film:

" Ben Hardy is Angel – I shall confirm it for you! But he’s not a very nice Angel! And that’s all I’ll say… "

And that is indeed all he needs to say because that concept art says everything else! In X-Men comics lore, Angel had his wings torn off, sending him spiraling into depression. Then the villainous Apocalypse showed up, created new wings for him and transformed him into Archangel, whose wingspan is now capable of a lot more than just flight. Naturally, Archangel then found himself torn between his inner goodness and the bad guy who gave him his powers back.

If this all sounds a little silly, that’s because it is. Imagine a movie where the great Oscar Isaac, playing an immortal supervillain, builds a set of razor-sharp wings and attaches them to the body of a guy whose normal wings were removed. That’s just nutty. Yet we couldn’t be more interested in seeing how Singer brings this storyline to the big screen. The X-Men movies have often sidestepped more bizarre and far-out corners of the comics, but this is as weird as they get.

X-Men: Apocalypse is slated to hit theaters on May 27, 2016.

OFFICIAL: RUSSO BROTHERS TO DIRECT TWO-PART "AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR"

Marvel has confirmed that Joe and Anthony Russo will direct the upcoming two-part "Avengers: Infinity War" film event. The directors have been the rumored frontrunners for the job since way back in November. In late March, the duo's involvement in "Infinity War" was reported as official by The Hollywood Reporter and Badass Digest. With this announcement, Marvel officially cements the Russos as the next "Avengers" directors.

The Russos first enlisted with Marvel for 2014's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and will return to helm 2016's "Captain America: Civil War." "Winter Soldier" went on to gross nearly $260 million domestically, outpacing its predecessor -- 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger" -- by about $83 million. Nestled within the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, the blockbuster "Avengers" franchise has so far been the brainchild of writer/director Joss Whedon. Whedon has been behind the camera for both 2012's "Marvel's the Avengers" and the upcoming "Avengers: Age of Ultron."

Unlike the preceding "Avengers" two films, "Avengers: Infinity War" will unfold in two parts towards the end of Marvel's Phase Three slate of films. "Avengers: Infinity War -- Part 1" will be released on May 4, 2018. "Avengers: Infinity War -- Part 2" will follow a nearly year later on May 3, 2019.

BATTLEWORLD: DECIPHERING THE THEME PARK MAP OF THE POST-MARVEL UNIVERSE ( V )

Four more parts....

17. MARVILLE

The 2002 comic series Marville, written by then-publisher Bill Jemas, is rightly regarded as one of the worst comics Marvel ever published. The Battleworld teaser video placed a Skottie Young AvX babies cover in this region, and we guessed that meant this was Skottie Young world rather than AvX world — and maybe a home to all of Marvel's satirical characters, including Obnoxio the Clown and Teen Hulk from the humor magazine Crazy.
Actually, it's both Skottie Young world and AvX world. Young will write and draw Giant-Size Little Marvel: AvX, an epic throwdown between his pint-sized versions of Marvel heroes.

18. THE EYE OF AGAMOTTO

With a Doctor Strange movie scheduled for next year, a new Doctor Strange series is inevitable, so it's a safe bet that it starts here, in the domain officially set aside for the good doctor. This may also be where some of Marvel's diabolical extra-dimensional hoop-de-hoo ends up.

19. CLASSIFIED

A continental horn with an archipelago leading to Dystopia. As the largest landmass touching the 616 and Ultimate Marvel zones, this feels like it ought to be significant. It also shares a border with another Classified realm. The one major reality that I can't otherwise account for, and that perhaps most deserves proximity to the Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe, is the New Universe, so let's put that one here

20a. ATTILAN

A little blip in the middle of Marvel 616, and the home of Marvel's ongoing effort to make people excited about the Inhumans. This is where Charles Soule and John Timms will set the next installment of the Inhumans' adventures with Attilan Rising.

See you soon with a few more ....

THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS MEET THE STAR TREK CREW IN ‘THE SPECTRUM WAR’ THIS JULY

By Francesco Francavilla
This weekend at Wondercon, IDW and DC Comics announced a new crossover that will send the Green Lantern Corps to the Star Trek Universe in a story titled Spectrum War this July. Written by long-time Star Trek writer Mike Johnson and penciled by Angel Hernández, the miniseries will feature both the current Corps and the current Enterprise crew from the Chris Pine/Karl Urban film era.
By Gabriel Rodríguez
The miniseries will see Hal Jordan and co teaming up with Kirk and pals when lantern rings head straight into the hands of some familiar faces from the Star Trek Universe. In order to get them back — and keep the universe safe from certain mysterious villains who also want to get a hold of the rings — the two forces will have to pair up across the six-issue miniseries.

Considering DC and IDW have both been surprisingly open about sharing their properties with other companies in the past, it’s no great shock to see the two publishers finally decide to cross over their big sci-fi properties, and it will be interesting to see if this opens the door to further DC/Star Trek crossovers.
Star Trek and Green Lantern share quite a few thematic similarities that make them a particularly good match, including the fact that they’re both set in distant space, but it’ll probably be most interesting to see how the fight-first approach of the Corps will contrast with the more considered — logical, you might say — strategy of the Enterprise Crew.
Issue #1 is out in July.

BATTLEWORLD: DECIPHERING THE THEME PARK MAP OF THE POST-MARVEL UNIVERSE ( IV )

Following the map ....

13. NEW MARS

The home of Killraven and the War of the Worlds Martian tripods, and maybe some other pulpy sci-fi elements. Several Marvel comics in recent years have shown flashes of a future in which Marvel characters interact with tripods. Maybe this is where it happens?

14. CLASSIFIED

The second classified region sits nestled beside Utopolis, which doesn't offer many clues, and atop a cluster of pulpy and fantastical worlds. Maybe this is the Conan-inspired realm of Kulan Gath? But again, I've no ideas why Marvel would keep that a secret.

15. HIGHER AVALON

We thought this region might house the last of the Captain Britain Corps and the omniversal overseers now seeking new employment, and maybe the seeds of a rebuilt multiverse.
Of course, we had the wrong Captain Britain; this domain focuses on Faiza Hussain, the inheritor of the title in Paul Cornell and Leonard Kirk's Captain Britain and MI:13. Now she's starring in Captain Britain and the Mighty Defenders, by Al Ewing and Alan Davis, with a team that includes White Tiger, She-Hulk, Prowler (in a Spider-fied costume) and a young iron person named Kid Rescue.

16. ARACHNIA

Arachne is the second Spider-Woman, Julia Carpenter, so we hoped this might be a reference to Spider-Gwen's reality. We were partly right. This is actually the Spider-Verse book, helpfully titled Spider-Verse, starring Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Man: India, Spider-Girl, Spider-UK and Spider-Ham, and written by Mike Costa and drawn by Andre Aruajo.

AN ANIMATED ’60S ‘BATMAN’ MOVIE IS COMING FOR THE SHOW’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY

“You can look forward to a new, animated Batman full-length 90 minute feature, coming out on the 50th anniversary.”

So sayeth Burt Ward, Robin the Boy Wonder on the 1960s Batman television show and film, at a recent convention appearance, revealing that the iconic camp series’ 50th anniversary will be celebrated by he and co-star Adam West by providing their voices for a new animated movie done in the style of their old show.
A huge success in its day, remembered for its goofy humor, bright costumes, outlandish villains, and melodramatic cliffhangers, West and Ward’s Batman eventually became the black sheep of the comic-book adaptation world.
Its arch, winking tone marked it as a dated relic, and its “Pow! Ziff! Gorff!” sound effects became a dismissive shorthand in a million mainstream news articles supposedly proclaiming comics “aren’t for kids any more” (while simultaneously implying that they should be). But as comics gained increasing cultural legitimacy in recent years, the ’60s Batman has undergone a bit of a reevaluation. Despite all that baggage, it was often an incredibly entertaining show.
DC now publishes a (very fun) Batman ’66 comic book, and the entire run of the series was recently released on Blu-ray. After decades of dismissal, ’60s Batman is kind of cool again. With the show’s golden anniversary upon us, it’s a perfect time to give West and Ward’s interpretations of the characters one last great moment in the spotlight (although Ward does also say in that video above that there could possibly be two animated projects in the works next year). Will the Dynamic Duo get a duo of dynamic DVDs to dazzle devout Bat-devotees? Tune in next blog post to find out: Same Bat-time, Sam Bat-website!
